It&#8217;s also the basis from which contacts lines are drawn on the maps on this website. Grid layout 2nd sub-division<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Maidenhead Locator Grid &#8220;squares&#8221; are distorted when viewed on any non-<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Equirectangular_projection\">equirectangular<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cartographic_projection\">cartographic projection<\/a> such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Azimuthal_equidistant_projection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Azimuthal Equidistant<\/a> map projections used on this website.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The world grid layout consists of 324 major squares of 10\u00b0 latitude x 20\u00b0 longitude (Figure 1). Within each of these are 100 secondary squares of 1\u00b0 x 2\u00b0 (Figure 2), and within each of these 576 tertiary squares of 2.5&#8243; x 5&#8243; (Figure 3). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The locator square highlighted in Figure 6 would be read as <strong>AA01pi<\/strong>.
